Baldwin IV was born in 1161 to King Amalric I of Jerusalem. He contracted leprosy at a young age, which disfigured his face and eventually left him blind and unable to walk. Despite his physical limitations, Baldwin was a brilliant and charismatic leader. He ascended to the throne in 1177, and he quickly proved his ability to rule.
Baldwin faced many challenges during his reign, including the threat of invasion from Saladin, the sultan of Egypt and Syria. In 1187, Saladin launched a major offensive against Jerusalem, and Baldwin’s forces were outnumbered and outgunned. However, Baldwin refused to give up, and he rallied his troops to defend the city. After a siege of two months, Jerusalem finally fell to Saladin. Baldwin was captured and taken prisoner, but he was treated with respect by Saladin. He died in captivity in 1186.
