About the anime

Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The series began serialization in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, and has been collected into 30 tankōbon volumes as of December 9, 2019. It is set in a world where humanity lives in cities surrounded by enormous walls due to the Titans, gigantic humanoids that eat humans seemingly without reason. The story centers on Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert, whose lives are changed forever after the appearance of a Colossus Titan brings about the destruction of their home town and the death of Eren’s mother. Vowing revenge and to reclaim the world from the Titans, Eren and his friends join the Scout Regiment, an elite group of soldiers who fight Titans.

Attack on Titan has become a commercial success and is one of the most popular manga series of all time, having sold over 100 million copies worldwide as of December 2019. It has also been a critical success, with the series being praised for its atmosphere, story, characters, and the social commentary it incorporates. The anime adaptation produced by Wit Studio has also been highly successful, and both the anime and the manga have received numerous awards.

One of the key themes of Attack on Titan is the danger of blindly following authority. The Titans are portrayed as a mindless, destructive force that represents the dangers of mob mentality. Similarly, the government and military officials within the series are often shown to be corrupt and willing to sacrifice the lives of their own citizens for their own gain. The main characters of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are forced to question their own beliefs and the authority figures in their lives as they grapple with the reality of their world.

Another important theme in Attack on Titan is the concept of identity and the search for purpose. Eren’s fierce determination to protect his friends and eliminate all Titans is fueled by his desire to avenge his mother’s death and find a sense of self. Mikasa, who has a troubled past, finds a new family and sense of belonging with Eren and the Scout Regiment. Similarly, Armin struggles with feelings of inadequacy and his own self-worth, but ultimately finds his own strength and purpose through his friendship with Eren and Mikasa.

The series also explores themes of nationalism and the cost of war. The walls that protect the human population from the Titans are seen as symbols of their national pride, and the characters are fiercely protective of their home. However, the reality of war and the sacrifices that must be made for the greater good are not sugarcoated. The Scout Regiment is depicted as a group of soldiers who are willing to lay down their lives in the fight against the Titans, and the consequences of their actions weigh heavily on their shoulders.

Attack on Titan is known for its intense and brutal action scenes, which are made all the more impactful by the series’ use of CGI animation. The Titans, with their human-like faces and mindless destruction, are particularly unsettling and have become iconic within the anime community. The series also boasts strong character development and a well-crafted story, with unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Overall, Attack on Titan is a thought-provoking and action-packed series that has cemented its place as a modern anime classic. Its exploration of themes such as the dangers of blindly following authority, the search for identity and purpose, and the cost of war make it a must-watch for fans of the genre. Its intense action scenes and memorable characters make it an exciting and engaging viewing experience for audiences of all ages.
In conclusion, Attack on Titan is a powerful and influential work that has garnered a massive following around the world. Its themes of nationalism, the dangers of blindly following authority, and the costs of war are particularly relevant in today’s political climate, and the series’ depiction of these issues is thought-provoking and nuanced.

The characters of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are well-developed and relatable, and their struggles to find their place in the world and protect their loved ones are heart-wrenching. The action scenes are intense and visually stunning, and the Titans are a truly frightening and memorable foe.

Attack on Titan is a must-see for fans of anime and action-adventure storytelling. Its blend of thrilling action, complex characters, and thought-provoking themes make it a standout series that will continue to be remembered for years to come.
